What Is Synastry?

Synastry is the astrological technique of comparing two birth charts to understand the dynamics, strengths, and challenges of a relationship. By overlaying one chart onto another, astrologers can see which planets form aspects — geometric angles like conjunctions, trines, squares, and oppositions — between the two charts. These inter-chart connections reveal the invisible architecture of attraction, conflict, emotional resonance, and growth potential that define every significant relationship.

Unlike a composite chart (which blends two charts into one), synastry preserves each individual's chart and examines how the planets of Person A interact with the planets of Person B. This makes it an extraordinarily precise tool for understanding who does what in a relationship, which person activates which energies, and where the most productive or challenging dynamics are likely to emerge.

House Overlays Explained

House overlays reveal where your partner's planetary energies land in your natal chart — which life areas they activate, energize, and transform. When your partner's Venus falls in your 5th house, they bring romance and creativity into your world of pleasure and self-expression. When their Saturn falls in your 4th house, they may bring structure (or restriction) to your home and emotional foundations.

The house overlay system is what makes synastry so specific and personal. Two couples may both have Venus-Mars conjunctions in their synastry, but the house placements will differentiate how that chemistry manifests — in one couple it may play out through shared creative projects, while in another it drives the dynamic of their physical relationship. Understanding overlays alongside aspects creates a three-dimensional picture of the relationship.
