Moon Sign Calculator

Find the sign the Moon was in when you were born — the part of your chart that governs feelings, needs and instinct

Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth. Where the Sun describes who you are becoming, the Moon describes what you need to feel safe: how you react before you think, what comforts you, how you love in private. The Moon moves through the whole zodiac in about 27 days and spends two to three days in each sign, so most people can find their moon sign from the birth date alone. This calculator computes the Moon's real position for your date, time and place, in your browser, and tells you whether the Moon changed sign on your birthday.

Enter your birth date, your birth time if you know it, and your birthplace — the calculation runs in your browser, nothing is sent.

The Moon changes sign every two to three days: the time matters less than for the Ascendant, but it decides on crossover days.

Birth Date

The Moon spends 2 to 3 days in each sign. On most dates the sign is the same from midnight to midnight, so the date alone is often enough.

Birth Time (optional)

It only matters on the days the Moon crosses from one sign to the next. Tick "I don't know my birth time" and the calculator checks whether yours is one of them.

Birthplace

Used for the time zone only: a birth at 11 pm in Lisbon and one at 11 pm in Manila are different moments for the Moon.

Lunar Cycle

The Moon travels about 13° a day and completes the zodiac in 27.3 days — twelve or thirteen times a year. That is why it is the fastest-moving point in a chart.

Moon Phase

The result also shows how much of the Moon was lit at your birth. A new-Moon birth and a full-Moon birth colour the same sign very differently.

The Big Three

Sun, Moon and Ascendant are the three pillars of a chart. The Moon is the inner one: it describes the person only your family and partner get to meet.

What Is a Moon Sign?

The moon sign is the zodiac sign in which the Moon stood, seen from Earth, at the moment you were born. Astrologers use the tropical zodiac, which starts at the spring equinox, so the sign is a 30° slice of the ecliptic rather than a constellation.

In the chart, the Moon stands for the emotional body: moods, memory, attachment, the need for security, the relationship with the mother and with food. It shows how you behave at home, when nobody is watching and no role has to be played. Two people with the same Sun sign but different moon signs can feel like strangers to each other; two people who share a moon sign often understand each other without a word.

Because the Moon changes sign every two to three days, it is also the point that most distinguishes you from people born the same month. Your Sun sign is shared with one twelfth of humanity; your Sun-Moon combination with one in 144.

Calculating Your Moon Sign Without a Birth Time

This is the question most calculators dodge, so here is the honest answer. The Moon spends about 2.5 days in each sign. Over a given calendar day there is roughly a one-in-three chance that it crosses a boundary. On the other two days out of three, the sign is the same at 00:00 and at 23:59, and the birth time is irrelevant.

Tick "I don't know my birth time" and the calculator computes the Moon at the start and at the end of your birth day, in the time zone of your birthplace. If the sign is the same, you have your answer with certainty. If it changed, the tool gives you the exact hour of the crossing: "Taurus until 14:37, then Gemini". A birth certificate, a hospital record or a parent's memory of "it was before lunch" is then enough to decide.

If you cannot settle it, read both sign descriptions. People usually recognise themselves clearly in one of the two — and when they do not, the degree of the Moon is usually very close to the cusp, which astrologers read as a blend of both.

How the Calculation Works

The calculator first converts your local birth time into universal time using the historical time-zone rules of your birthplace, including daylight-saving changes of the period. It then computes the geocentric ecliptic longitude of the Moon for that instant with a lunar ephemeris derived from the Improved Lunar Ephemeris of 1954 and E. W. Brown's lunar theory, as implemented in the open-source astronomy-engine library. The longitude is expressed against the true equinox of the date, which is the tropical zodiac astrology uses.

Dividing that longitude by 30 gives the sign; the remainder gives the degree within the sign, which the result displays. The same engine is used for the daily horoscope and the natal chart calculator on this site, so your Moon will land at the same degree in all three tools. The precision is better than a tenth of a degree — only a birth within a few minutes of a sign boundary could leave any doubt.

Everything runs on your device: no date, time or place leaves your browser.

What Your Moon Sign Reveals

The Moon's element tells the first story. A Moon in a fire sign (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) feels fast and loud, needs movement and recovers quickly. A Moon in an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) feels through the body and finds security in routine, food and things that last. A Moon in an air sign (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) needs to talk a feeling through before it becomes real, and calms down with ideas and company. A Moon in a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) absorbs the mood of a room and needs privacy to digest it.

The sign then adds its temperament. Moon in Cancer, the Moon's own sign, is protective and nostalgic; Moon in Capricorn keeps feelings under control and distrusts drama; Moon in Scorpio feels everything at full intensity and forgives slowly; Moon in Sagittarius needs a horizon. Each sign page on this site has a dedicated Moon section.

The Moon also describes what you look for in a home and in a partner: the moon sign often matches the Sun or Ascendant of the people we feel most at ease with.

Moon Sign, Sun Sign and Ascendant

The Sun is the sign most people know: it describes identity, vitality and direction, what you are growing into. The Ascendant is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth: the way you appear, your reflexes in a new situation, the surface others meet first. The Moon sits between the two — it is the private self, the emotional habits formed in childhood, what you fall back on when tired.

When Sun and Moon share an element, the person feels coherent: wanting and needing point the same way. When they conflict — a Leo Sun with a Pisces Moon, say — there is an inner conversation between the person one wants to be and the person one is at 3 am. Neither is more important; the chart is the dialogue.

The Ascendant needs an exact birth time, because it changes sign every two hours. The Moon is more forgiving, which is why it is the best place to start when the birth time is uncertain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I find my moon sign without my birth time?
Usually, yes. The Moon stays in a sign for about two and a half days, so on roughly two days out of three it does not change sign between midnight and midnight. Tick "I don't know my birth time": the calculator checks your birth day and either confirms the sign or gives you the hour at which the Moon crossed into the next one, so you know exactly what remains uncertain.
Why does another site give me a different moon sign?
Three usual causes. The other site may use the sidereal zodiac (common in Vedic astrology), which shifts every position back by about 24°. It may have applied the wrong time zone or ignored daylight-saving time, which matters when your birth is close to a sign boundary. Or you were born on a crossover day and one of the two tools assumed noon. This calculator uses the tropical zodiac and the historical time-zone rules of your birthplace.
How often does the Moon change sign?
Every 2.3 to 2.7 days. The Moon moves between 12° and 15° a day depending on its distance from Earth, and each sign spans 30°. It completes the whole zodiac in 27.3 days, so in a typical month it visits every sign once, and some signs twice.
Is the moon sign the same as the zodiac sign?
No. When people say "my sign", they mean the Sun sign, the sign the Sun was in on their birthday. The moon sign is the sign the Moon was in at the same moment. About one person in twelve has the Moon and the Sun in the same sign; everyone else has two different signs, and the Moon describes the emotional, private side.
Does the moon phase matter?
The result shows the illuminated fraction of the Moon at your birth. Astrologers read a birth near the new Moon as instinctive and beginning-oriented, a birth near the full Moon as relational and expressive, with Sun and Moon in opposite signs. The phase does not change your moon sign, but it adds a layer to how that sign is lived.
Where does the Moon fall in my full natal chart?
The moon sign is one piece of the picture. The natal chart calculator on this site places the Moon in its house and shows its aspects to the other planets — a Moon in Scorpio square Saturn feels very different from a Moon in Scorpio trine Venus. Use the moon sign to start, the chart to go deeper.
