Mercury Retrograde 2027: Dates, Signs and Shadow Periods (Full Calendar)

Three times a year, ☿ Mercury slows down, stalls, and then appears to move backwards through the zodiac for about three weeks. In 2027 that happens from February 9 to March 3, from June 10 to July 4, and from October 7 to 28. And all three times, the move is the same: Mercury turns retrograde in a water sign and turns direct again in the air sign just before it — from Pisces back to Aquarius, from Cancer back to Gemini, from Scorpio back to Libra.
This page is the complete calendar for the year: exact dates in US Eastern Time, the shadow periods, what is at stake in each window, what is reasonable to go ahead with or put off, and then a reading sign by sign. It will be updated at every station. If you are looking for this fall’s retrograde, Mercury is retrograde from October 24 to November 13, 2026; we covered it in detail in our article on the 2026 Venus–Mercury double retrograde.
Mercury is retrograde three times in 2027 (US Eastern Time, with UTC): from February 9 (12:35 p.m. ET / 17:35 UTC, at 5°59′ Pisces) to March 3 (7:34 a.m. ET / 12:34 UTC, at 20°55′ Aquarius), from June 10 (2:18 p.m. ET / 18:18 UTC, at 6°22′ Cancer) to July 4 (3:40 p.m. ET / 19:40 UTC, at 27°28′ Gemini) and from October 7 (10:40 a.m. ET / 14:40 UTC, at 4°56′ Scorpio) to October 28 (10:10 a.m. ET / 14:10 UTC, at 19°19′ Libra). Counting the shadow periods, the three cycles stretch from January 25 to March 23, from May 26 to July 19 and from September 17 to November 13. The first retrograde of 2028 begins on January 24, in Aquarius.
Mercury retrograde 2027: all three periods in one table (Eastern Time)
The calendar first, the interpretation second. For each 2027 retrograde, the table gives both stations (the moment Mercury changes direction), the signs involved and the full shadow period. Times are US Eastern: standard time (EST) in February and early March, daylight time (EDT) in June–July and October. In London (UTC in winter, UTC+1 from March 28 to October 31), every station falls five hours later. The degrees will matter further down, when you check whether a point in your own chart is directly involved.
| Period | Retrograde → direct (ET) | Signs | Full shadow |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | February 9, 12:35 p.m. → March 3, 7:34 a.m. | 5°59′ Pisces → 20°55′ Aquarius | January 25 → March 23 |
| 2nd | June 10, 2:18 p.m. → July 4, 3:40 p.m. | 6°22′ Cancer → 27°28′ Gemini | May 26 → July 19 |
| 3rd | October 7, 10:40 a.m. → October 28, 10:10 a.m. | 4°56′ Scorpio → 19°19′ Libra | September 17 → November 13 |
In all, Mercury spends 67 days retrograde in 2027, a little over 18% of the year — the usual share. There is no fourth retrograde in December: the next one begins on January 24, 2028, at 19°42′ Aquarius, and ends on February 14, 2028.
Mercury turns direct on November 13, 2026, at 10:52 a.m. ET (15:52 UTC), at 5°02′ Scorpio, and leaves its shadow period on November 30. And this is no accident: the October 2027 retrograde begins at 4°56′ Scorpio, six minutes of arc from the exact spot where the 2026 one came to a halt. In 2027, Mercury picks the conversation back up right where it left off.
What is Mercury retrograde, and why does it happen three times a year?
Mercury retrograde is a trick of perspective. The planet, which circles the Sun in 88 days, overtakes us “on the inside” roughly every 116 days. As it passes between the Earth and the Sun, its apparent position in the zodiac seems to slide backwards for twenty to twenty-four days. That makes three passes a year, sometimes four, as in 2022.
Nothing actually moves backwards. It's the same illusion as the train you pass on the next track, which seems to roll in reverse in your window. We explain it in detail on our Mercury retrograde page, along with the history of the phenomenon and its cycles.
What astrology does with it is a symbolic reading. Mercury rules messages, short trips, contracts, tools and reasoning. When it retraces its steps, the verbs of the period all start with “re”: re-read, review, resume, repair, reconsider, reconfirm. It isn't a curse that breaks phones and makes you lose your keys. It's a stretch of time when whatever was said too fast, read too fast or signed too fast comes back to the table. At ZodiacNova, we prefer to understand rather than predict: this calendar gives you dates and themes, not orders.
2027, the year of transition: every retrograde starts in water and ends in air
Mercury's retrogrades drift slowly from one element to the next, over a cycle of six to seven years. In 2026, all three took place entirely in water signs (Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio). In 2028, all three will take place entirely in air signs (Aquarius, Gemini, Libra). The year 2027 is the hinge between them: each retrograde begins in water and ends in air.
This is what we call the water → air triptych, and it is the key to reading the whole year:
- February–March: from Pisces (water) to Aquarius (air).
- June–July: from Cancer (water) to Gemini (air).
- October: from Scorpio (water) to Libra (air).
In astrology, water is the element of feeling, memory and what we sense without saying it; air is the element of words, ideas and exchange. Three times in 2027, then, Mercury sets out from something felt — a hunch, something left unsaid, an emotion that lingers — and ends its backward run in a sign where it has to be spelled out. Each period asks the same question: “What have I been feeling for weeks that I still haven't put into words?” What was felt in 2026 asks to be said in 2027; in 2028, all that will remain is to think it through clearly.
Shadow periods: why the real calendar is wider than the official dates
The shadow period is the stretch of zodiac that Mercury covers three times: once going forward, once going backwards during the retrograde, and one last time going forward again. The pre-shadow begins when Mercury first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct; the post-shadow ends when it gets back to the degree where it turned retrograde.
| Period | Pre-shadow | Retrograde | Post-shadow |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | from January 25 (20°55′ Aquarius) | February 9 → March 3 | until March 23 (5°59′ Pisces) |
| 2nd | from May 26 (27°28′ Gemini) | June 10 → July 4 | until July 19 (6°22′ Cancer) |
| 3rd | from September 17 (19°19′ Libra) | October 7 → 28 | until November 13 (4°56′ Scorpio) |
We work with the rule of the three passes: on the first pass, a subject shows up (an offer, a message, a project); on the second, during the retrograde, it comes back to be reviewed; on the third, it gets settled. In practice, if something gets started between January 25 and February 9, expect to see it again from another angle before March 3, and to be able to close it before March 23. The pre-shadow is the time for taking notes; the post-shadow is the time for signing.
First retrograde: February 9 to March 3, 2027, from Pisces to Aquarius
Mercury turns retrograde on February 9, 2027, at 12:35 p.m. ET, at 5°59′ Pisces, backs into Aquarius on February 18 and turns direct on March 3 at 7:34 a.m. ET, at 20°55′ Aquarius. The shadow period runs from January 25 to March 23. This is the haziest retrograde of the year: it unfolds between February's two eclipses.
| Date (ET) | Event | Position |
|---|---|---|
| January 25 | Mercury enters its shadow period | 20°55′ Aquarius |
| January 31 (February 1 UTC) | Mercury enters Pisces | 0° Pisces |
| February 6 | New Moon and annular solar eclipse in Aquarius | 17°38′ Aquarius |
| February 9, 12:35 p.m. (17:35 UTC) | Mercury turns retrograde | 5°59′ Pisces |
| February 18, 7:17 a.m. | Retrograde Mercury backs into Aquarius | 29°59′ Aquarius |
| February 18, 11:39 a.m. | Sun–Mercury inferior conjunction (cazimi), the heart of the retrograde | 29°48′ Aquarius |
| February 20, 6:24 p.m. (23:24 UTC) | Full Moon and penumbral lunar eclipse in Virgo | 2°06′ Virgo |
| March 3, 7:34 a.m. (12:34 UTC) | Mercury turns direct | 20°55′ Aquarius |
| March 8 | New Moon in Pisces | 17°35′ Pisces |
| March 18 | Mercury re-enters Pisces | 0° Pisces |
| March 23 | End of the shadow period | 5°59′ Pisces |
Mercury is traditionally ill at ease in Pisces: the planet of precise reasoning is crossing the sign of intuition, haziness and what you feel without being able to explain it. From February 9 to 18, messages get read between the lines and taken the wrong way; in exchange, imagination, music and private writing flow with rare ease. Then Mercury backs into Aquarius, the sign of friends, networks, groups and technology. A group project, a shared tool, a misunderstanding within a team or a circle of friends comes back up for discussion.
The heart of the period, the inferior conjunction with the Sun, falls on February 18 at 29°48′ Aquarius — the very last degree of the sign, just a few hours after Mercury has backed into it. The image speaks for itself: a decisive piece of information arriving at the last minute, just when you thought the file was closed. And this retrograde plays out between two eclipses, the one on February 6 in Aquarius and the one on the evening of February 20 in Virgo: over these three weeks, the turning points they signal get discussed, corrected and reworded far more than they get decided.
Good to do: re-read what you sent before taking offense at a reply, clear up a misunderstanding in a group, pick up a creative project you had set aside, reconnect with a friend you lost touch with. Better postponed if you can: the public launch of a group project, buying a device before you know which model you want, any decision made on the strength of a rumor. Signs most involved: Pisces and Aquarius, where it all happens; Virgo and Leo, opposite; Gemini, Sagittarius, Taurus and Scorpio, by square.
Second retrograde: June 10 to July 4, 2027, from Cancer to Gemini
Mercury turns retrograde on June 10, 2027, at 2:18 p.m. ET, at 6°22′ Cancer, backs into Gemini on June 26 and turns direct on July 4 at 3:40 p.m. ET, at 27°28′ Gemini. The shadow period runs from May 26 to July 19. It is the longest of the three (twenty-four days), and in Eastern Time it ends less than a day after a New Moon.
| Date (ET) | Event | Position |
|---|---|---|
| May 26 | Mercury enters its shadow period | 27°28′ Gemini |
| May 28 | Mercury enters Cancer | 0° Cancer |
| June 4 | New Moon in Gemini | 13°59′ Gemini |
| June 10, 2:18 p.m. (18:18 UTC) | Mercury turns retrograde | 6°22′ Cancer |
| June 18 (June 19 UTC) | Full Moon in Sagittarius | 27°34′ Sagittarius |
| June 21, 10:10 a.m. | Summer solstice: the Sun enters Cancer | 0° Cancer |
| June 23, 4:00 a.m. | Sun–Mercury inferior conjunction (cazimi), the heart of the retrograde | 1°40′ Cancer |
| June 26 | Retrograde Mercury backs into Gemini | 29°59′ Gemini |
| July 3, 11:02 p.m. (July 4, 03:02 UTC) | New Moon in Cancer | 11°58′ Cancer |
| July 4, 3:40 p.m. (19:40 UTC) | Mercury turns direct | 27°28′ Gemini |
| July 12 | Mercury re-enters Cancer | 0° Cancer |
| July 19 | End of the shadow period | 6°22′ Cancer |
Cancer is the sign of home, family, memory and whatever we protect. From June 10 to 26, Mercury backs through it: a family conversation starts up again, a housing matter comes back, a memory resurfaces with unexpected precision. The retrograde crosses the June 21 solstice and the June 23 cazimi, at 1°40′ Cancer: the heart of the period plays out at the very start of the sign, around one very simple question — who counts as “home”?
Then, from June 26, Mercury moves back into Gemini, its own domicile. It is the only retrograde of the year that ends in a sign where Mercury is at home: the last days are sharper, chattier and easier to sort out. A New Moon in Cancer late on July 3, then the station direct the following afternoon: the Fourth of July is the pivot of the summer, the day when whatever had been left hanging since late May finally finds its words.
Good to do: get back in touch with a family member, sort through photos and paperwork, re-read your summer bookings before you leave, finish an administrative process you started in May. Better postponed if you can: signing a lease or a purchase agreement on a home, buying a nonrefundable ticket on impulse, kicking off a renovation that hasn't been properly costed. Signs most involved: Cancer and Gemini; Capricorn and Sagittarius, opposite; Aries, Libra, Virgo and Pisces, by square.
Third retrograde: October 7 to 28, 2027, from Scorpio to Libra
Mercury turns retrograde on October 7, 2027, at 10:40 a.m. ET, at 4°56′ Scorpio, backs into Libra on October 16 and turns direct on October 28 at 10:10 a.m. ET, at 19°19′ Libra. The shadow period runs from September 17 to November 13. It is the shortest of the three (twenty-one days), and it picks up directly where the fall 2026 retrograde left off.
| Date (ET) | Event | Position |
|---|---|---|
| September 17 | Mercury enters its shadow period | 19°19′ Libra |
| September 27 | Mercury enters Scorpio | 0° Scorpio |
| September 29 (September 30 UTC) | New Moon in Libra | 6°44′ Libra |
| October 7, 10:40 a.m. (14:40 UTC) | Mercury turns retrograde | 4°56′ Scorpio |
| October 15 | Full Moon in Aries | 21°59′ Aries |
| October 16 | Retrograde Mercury backs into Libra | 29°59′ Libra |
| October 19, 11:31 a.m. | Sun–Mercury inferior conjunction (cazimi), the heart of the retrograde | 26°01′ Libra |
| October 28, 10:10 a.m. (14:10 UTC) | Mercury turns direct | 19°19′ Libra |
| October 29 | New Moon in Scorpio | 5°55′ Scorpio |
| November 9 (November 10 UTC) | Mercury re-enters Scorpio | 0° Scorpio |
| November 13 | End of the shadow period | 4°56′ Scorpio |
Scorpio is the sign of shared money, debts, intimacy and everything left unsaid. Mercury turns retrograde there at 4°56′, right where it came to a halt on November 13, 2026 (5°02′): whatever you had understood but not resolved at the end of fall 2026 comes back in October 2027 to be put into words. Then, from October 16, Mercury backs into Libra, the sign of contracts, partnership, agreements and fairness: the conversation shifts from “what's being hidden?” to “what's fair?”
The October 19 cazimi, at 26°01′ Libra, is the period's moment of clarity: an agreement you thought was balanced reveals what it really costs one of the two sides. And the New Moon in Scorpio on October 29, the day after the station direct, offers a blank page: it's the best window of the fall for signing whatever was renegotiated during the month.
Good to do: re-read a contract before renewing it, go over joint accounts, reopen a negotiation that stalled, ask the money question you keep dodging. Better postponed if you can: the final signature on a prenup or a business partnership agreement, a loan decided in a rush, the one line too many sent in writing. Signs most involved: Scorpio and Libra; Taurus and Aries, opposite; Leo, Aquarius, Cancer and Capricorn, by square.
What to do and not do during Mercury retrograde (without the paranoia)
Nothing is forbidden during Mercury retrograde. The period simply makes misunderstandings, delays and changes of mind more likely. Hence one simple rule: anything reversible is welcome, while anything irreversible deserves one more read — or, when you have the choice, a wait until the station direct.
We sum up the period with the three Rs: re-read (the message before you send it, the contract before you sign it, the address before you leave), reconfirm (the appointment, the time, the amount, what the other person understood) and reserve a buffer (time for the commute, budget for a tech purchase, leeway for a decision). Three habits that take ten minutes and head off most of what usually gets blamed on Mercury.
What the period favors: picking an abandoned project back up, reconnecting with someone you've lost touch with, repairing an object or a tool, renegotiating an existing agreement, backing up your files, re-reading a text with fresh eyes, finishing whatever has been dragging on. In 2027, add the thread that runs through the whole year: putting words to what you have been feeling for a long time.
What it's wise to postpone, when you have the choice: signing a contract you haven't read all the way through, buying a phone, a computer or a car without comparing, the public launch of a website or a campaign, the make-or-break conversation started over text. If a move, an exam or a wedding falls during a retrograde, there is no reason to reschedule it: the date was chosen long before, and that is exactly the kind of older decision Mercury retrograde does not call into question. Just build in the buffer.
The opposite trap: blaming everything on Mercury. A delayed flight in October is not a message from the sky; it's a delayed flight. Astrology describes a climate, not events. And if you were born during a Mercury retrograde — as roughly one person in five was — these periods often feel more familiar than difficult: you can check it in a few seconds with our natal chart calculator.
Mercury retrograde 2027 sign by sign
The readings below use solar houses: your Sun sign goes in the 1st house, and we look at which houses the signs crossed by each retrograde fall into. It's a reliable, simple method, but an approximate one: if you know your rising sign, read the text for that sign as well — it will often be more precise. For each sign you'll find the houses touched by the three periods, what changes, and the useful reflex for the year.
Aries: what Mercury retrograde 2027 means for you
In February, Mercury backs through your 12th house, the house of retreat and stocktaking: tiredness, a need for quiet, the urge to close a chapter before your season begins. Then it moves into the 11th house, and a group project or a friendship asks to be talked through again. In June, the retrograde touches the 4th house (family, home, renovations) and then the 3rd (short trips, paperwork, siblings): re-read the estimates and the schedules. In October, Mercury retraces exactly the houses Venus retrograde crossed for you in fall 2026: the 8th house of shared money, then the 7th house of partnership and contracts. What you understood a year ago gets negotiated for real this time.
Re-read before you hit send. Your speed is your strength eleven months out of twelve; during these three periods, it's your biggest risk.
Taurus: what Mercury retrograde 2027 means for you
February first brings you back to your friends and group projects (11th house), then to your career and reputation (10th house): a work matter you thought was closed lands back on the table, often with a piece of information that changes the math. In June, Mercury touches the 3rd house (words, short trips, paperwork) and then the 2nd house of money: an invoice to redo, a rate to renegotiate, an estimate to re-read line by line. In October, the retrograde crosses your 7th house — partner, business associate, client — and then the 6th house of daily work and health. An agreement made in a hurry in the spring asks to be rewritten.
An estimate read twice beats a deal closed fast. This year, your natural patience is your best negotiating tool.
Gemini: what Mercury retrograde 2027 means for you
Mercury rules your sign: its three retrogrades concern you all year long, and the summer one most of all. In February, the retrograde touches your 10th house (career, public image) and then the 9th (study, travel, beliefs): a position you took in public deserves some nuance. In June, it begins in your 2nd house of money and ends in your own sign, in the 1st house: Mercury turns direct on July 4 at 27°28′ Gemini, at home in its own sign and in yours. The last days of June are when the way you present yourself recalibrates. In October, the retrograde crosses the 6th house of daily work, then the 5th house of love, children and creativity.
Your word for the year: rephrase. You always have a second way of saying things; in 2027, it's often the right one.
Cancer: what Mercury retrograde 2027 means for you
February takes you far afield (9th house: a trip to reschedule, a course to reconsider) and then deep down (8th house: joint money, loans, inheritance). The period that really counts for you is June: Mercury turns retrograde in your sign on June 10, eleven days before your season begins, and backs through it until June 26 before moving into your 12th house. The way you talk about yourself and say what you want gets revised; the New Moon in your sign late on July 3, on the eve of the station direct, marks the real start of your year. In October, the retrograde touches your 5th house (love, children, creativity) and then the 4th house of home.
Before you reply, ask yourself whether it's your mood or the information doing the talking. Both are legitimate; only one deserves to be sent right away.
Leo: what Mercury retrograde 2027 means for you
February is your densest period: Mercury backs through your 8th house (shared money, intimacy, trust) and then your 7th house of partnership and contracts — and the February 6 solar eclipse falls in Aquarius, your opposite sign, in that same 7th house. A two-person agreement comes up for discussion again; wait until March 3, and better still until the 23rd, to finalize it. Summer is more inward: the 12th house in June calls for retreat and stocktaking before your birthday, then the 11th house brings back a friendship or a group project. In October, the retrograde crosses your 4th house (family, home) and then the 3rd (siblings, words, short trips).
Listen all the way to the end. It's the least natural exercise for you, and the one that pays off most this year.
Virgo: what Mercury retrograde 2027 means for you
Mercury rules your sign: each retrograde asks you to slow down a machine that usually runs on its own. In February, it begins in your 7th house — partner, associate, contract — and then moves into the 6th, the house of daily work and health; the lunar eclipse on the evening of February 20 falls in your sign, and what you expect from a partner suddenly comes into focus. In June, the retrograde touches the 11th house (friends, networks) and then the 10th house of career: a job application or a public announcement gets reworded. In October, it crosses your 3rd house (words, paperwork, short trips) and then your 2nd house: rates, income, the value you place on your work.
Make the list, then let it sit overnight. Your first sort is almost always right; your second read is the one that catches what you forgot.
Libra: what Mercury retrograde 2027 means for you
February touches your 6th house (organization, coworkers, health) and then your 5th house (love, children, creativity): a routine gets reorganized, then an old pleasure comes back. In June, the retrograde begins in your 10th house of career and ends in the 9th (study, travel, beliefs): a business trip gets rescheduled, a decision about your image gets reconsidered. October is your period: Mercury first backs through your 2nd house of money, then into your sign from October 16, and turns direct on October 28 at 19°19′ Libra, a few days after your season ends. The way you present yourself, negotiate and say no gets readjusted — for a long time to come.
Decide when things are clear, not when they're comfortable. The October 19 cazimi, in your sign, will give you that clarity.
Scorpio: what Mercury retrograde 2027 means for you
February revisits your 5th house (a romance, a child, a creative project) and then your 4th house (family, home): a family conversation picks up where it left off. In June, the retrograde touches the 9th house (travel, study, beliefs) and then the 8th house of shared money: a loan, an inheritance, a joint account to go over again. October is your period: Mercury turns retrograde in your sign, at 4°56′, right where it came to a halt on November 13, 2026. What you understood about yourself back then returns to be spoken, before Mercury moves into your 12th house and asks you for a little silence.
What you understood in November 2026 gets put into words in October 2027. Write it down before you say it; the sentence will be truer and less cutting.
Sagittarius: what Mercury retrograde 2027 means for you
February brings Mercury back into your 4th house (family, home, roots) and then your 3rd (short trips, siblings, paperwork): a question about the house gets reopened, then getting around gets complicated. In June, the retrograde crosses your 8th house (joint money, debts, intimacy) and then your 7th house of partnership and contracts — and the Full Moon of June 18 falls in your sign, midway through the period: what you really want from an agreement becomes visible. In October, Mercury backs through your 12th house, the house of retreat, just before your season, then into the 11th house of friends and group projects.
Check the schedule before you head out, and the address before you say you know it. Your optimism takes care of the rest.
Capricorn: what Mercury retrograde 2027 means for you
February touches your 3rd house (words, paperwork, short trips, siblings) and then your 2nd house of money: an official letter comes back around, a budget gets recalculated. In June, the retrograde begins in your 7th house — partner, associate, client — and ends in the 6th house of daily work: a contract re-read in June is a negotiation won in July. In October, Mercury backs through your 11th house (friends, networks, group projects) and then your 10th house of career: a professional announcement, a promotion or a change of role gets reworded before it is confirmed.
You already re-read everything. This year, also re-read what you didn't write: what the other person took from your silence.
Aquarius: what Mercury retrograde 2027 means for you
February is your period: Mercury begins its retreat in your 2nd house (money, values), then returns into your sign on February 18 and turns direct there on March 3, at 20°55′. The February 18 cazimi falls on the very last degree of Aquarius, and the February 6 solar eclipse took place in your sign twelve days earlier: the way you define yourself and present your ideas gets rewritten. In June, the retrograde touches the 6th house (daily work, health) and then the 5th house (love, creativity, children). In October, it crosses your 10th house of career and then your 9th house of study, travel and beliefs.
Your idea is good; the version other people have taken away from it may not be yet. Rephrase before you decide nobody is following you.
Pisces: what Mercury retrograde 2027 means for you
February is your period: Mercury turns retrograde in your sign on February 9, ten days before your season begins, and backs through it until the 18th before moving into your 12th house. Your way of expressing yourself — often through images, hunches and what you leave unsaid — gets revised; what you have been feeling for weeks goes looking for its words. The New Moon of March 8 in your sign, five days after the station direct, hands them to you. In June, the retrograde touches your 5th house (love, creativity, children) and then your 4th house of home. In October, it crosses the 9th house (travel, study, beliefs) and then the 8th house of shared money.
Write down what you feel before you say it. More than for any other sign, the sentence you write is truer than the sentence you feel.

Frequently asked questions about Mercury retrograde 2027
When is Mercury retrograde in 2027?
Mercury is retrograde three times in 2027 (US Eastern Time, with UTC): from February 9 (12:35 p.m. ET, 17:35 UTC) to March 3 (7:34 a.m. ET, 12:34 UTC), from Pisces back to Aquarius; from June 10 (2:18 p.m. ET, 18:18 UTC) to July 4 (3:40 p.m. ET, 19:40 UTC), from Cancer back to Gemini; and from October 7 (10:40 a.m. ET, 14:40 UTC) to October 28 (10:10 a.m. ET, 14:10 UTC), from Scorpio back to Libra. The shadow periods widen those windows to January 25 – March 23, May 26 – July 19 and September 17 – November 13.
How many times is Mercury retrograde in 2027?
Three times, for a total of 67 days, a little over 18% of the year. That's the usual rhythm: Mercury goes retrograde roughly every 116 days, for twenty to twenty-four days at a time. Some years have four, when the first one starts in the very first days of January or the last one at the very end of December; that isn't the case in 2027, whose last retrograde ends on October 28.
When is the next Mercury retrograde?
The fall 2026 retrograde, which began on October 24, ends on November 13, 2026, at 10:52 a.m. ET (15:52 UTC), at 5°02′ Scorpio, and its shadow period ends on November 30. The next one — the first of 2027 — begins on February 9, 2027, at 12:35 p.m. ET, at 5°59′ Pisces, and lasts until March 3. Its pre-shadow opens as early as January 25.
What is the Mercury retrograde shadow period?
It's the stretch of the zodiac that Mercury travels three times: going forward, going backwards, then going forward again. The pre-shadow begins when Mercury first reaches the degree where it will turn direct; the post-shadow ends when it gets back to the degree where it turned retrograde. In 2027, the three shadows run from January 25 to March 23, from May 26 to July 19 and from September 17 to November 13. The themes of the retrograde announce themselves during the pre-shadow and get settled during the post-shadow.
What signs is Mercury retrograde in during 2027?
Each 2027 retrograde begins in a water sign and ends in the air sign just before it: Pisces then Aquarius in February–March, Cancer then Gemini in June–July, Scorpio then Libra in October. It's a transition year: in 2026, all three retrogrades took place entirely in water signs, and in 2028 they will take place entirely in air signs.
Which signs are most affected by Mercury retrograde in 2027?
The signs Mercury is retrograde in, the signs opposite them and the signs square to them. In February–March: Pisces, Aquarius, Virgo and Leo, then Gemini, Sagittarius, Taurus and Scorpio. In June–July: Cancer, Gemini, Capricorn and Sagittarius, then Aries, Libra, Virgo and Pisces. In October: Scorpio, Libra, Taurus and Aries, then Leo, Aquarius, Cancer and Capricorn. Gemini and Virgo, both ruled by Mercury, are involved all year.
Can you sign a contract or buy a phone during Mercury retrograde?
Yes, as long as you re-read and build in a buffer. Nothing is forbidden; the period simply makes misunderstandings, delays and changes of mind more likely. A contract read all the way through, a device compared with others and bought with a return window, a trip planned with time to spare: none of these is a problem. What's better avoided is the irreversible commitment made in a hurry, on incomplete information.
When is the first Mercury retrograde of 2028?
From January 24, 2028 (6:03 a.m. ET), at 19°42′ Aquarius, to February 14, 2028 (7:38 a.m. ET), at 3°59′ Aquarius, entirely within that sign. Its pre-shadow begins on January 8, 2028. It opens the year of air-sign retrogrades: the next two will fall in Gemini (May 21 to June 14, 2028) and in Libra (September 19 to October 11, 2028).
