Eclipses 2027: The Complete Guide, From the Calendar to Your Birth Chart

Night-sky map: a golden total eclipse over Leo, a ring of fire over Aquarius, the nodal axis running between the twelve zodiac figures

Five eclipses in 2027, and two that really matter: the annular solar eclipse of February 6 at 17°38′ Aquarius and the total solar eclipse of August 2 at 9°55′ Leo, the longest of the century from dry land. The year’s three lunar eclipses (February 20, July 18, August 17) are penumbral, so faint that the naked eye misses them. All times in this article are Eastern Time (New York).

This guide gives the exact calendar, explains what an eclipse describes in astrology, shows where each one can be seen and, above all, helps you find which house of your chart it touches. For the rest of the year (stations, ingresses, twenty-five lunations), our guide Astrology 2027: key dates for every sign keeps the full calendar; here, we talk only about eclipses.

Quick answer

2027 is a year of solar eclipses. Both solar eclipses fall very close to the lunar nodes (3.3° and 1.6°), which makes them true central eclipses; the three lunar eclipses fall far from them (12° to 16°) and stay penumbral. Three of the five play out on the Leo–Aquarius axis, the nodal axis since summer 2026; the February 20 eclipse in Virgo is the last of the Virgo–Pisces axis. And the four main ones return, almost to the degree, to the eclipses of February and August 2008: that’s the 19-year echo. From the United States, no solar eclipse can be seen this year; the UK and Ireland get a 27% to 42% partial on the morning of August 2, and North America gets the faint lunar eclipse of August 17 at 3:13 am.

The 2027 eclipse calendar

Five eclipses in two seasons: a short one in February, a long one from mid-July to mid-August. Times are those of maximum eclipse, in Eastern Time; the last column gives the distance between the eclipse and the nearest lunar node, which decides its astronomical strength.

Most calendars count only four eclipses in 2027, and they’re right to simplify: the July 18 eclipse merely grazes Earth’s penumbra for thirteen minutes, 16° from the node, which no eye can detect. We list it to be exact; we don’t give it a section. The two that shape the year are the solar eclipses. On February 6 (maximum at 10:59 am Eastern), the ring of fire lasts up to 7 min 51 s over the South Atlantic. On August 2 (6:06 am), totality reaches 6 min 23 s in Egypt, about forty miles southeast of Luxor.

Two calendar coincidences deserve a line. The lunar eclipse of February 20 (6:12 pm) comes fifteen hours before Mars retrograde backs into Leo (February 21, 9:15 am): the February eclipse season plays out with Mars and Jupiter retrograde, joined by Mercury on February 9. And the total eclipse of August 2 arrives a week after Jupiter enters Virgo (July 26, 12:45 am Eastern, still the evening of July 25 on the West Coast): it closes the “Jupiter in Leo” year rather than opening it.

What an eclipse means in astrology

An eclipse is a new moon or a full moon that occurs near a lunar node, where the Moon’s orbit crosses the path of the Sun as seen from Earth. In astrology, it keeps the meaning of the lunation it amplifies: a solar eclipse is a new moon with the volume turned up, a beginning that imposes itself; a lunar eclipse is an amplified full moon, a culmination or a revelation. What the eclipse adds to the lunation is the nodal axis, in other words a direction.

There are twelve or thirteen new moons a year but only two to five eclipses, because the Moon passes its nodes only twice a month and the Sun is there only twice a year. Those two five-week windows are the eclipse seasons. In 2027 they open in early February and mid-July. In between, the new and full moons are ordinary.

Distance from the node explains everything else. The closer the eclipse, the more central it is: on August 2 the Sun is only 1.6° from the south node, hence an exceptionally long totality; on February 6, 3.3° from the north node still gives a fine annular eclipse. The three full moons of 2027, by contrast, fall 12°, 13° and 16° from the node: the Moon crosses only Earth’s penumbra. Astrologically, we read the same hierarchy: the solar eclipses of 2027 are strong, the lunar ones are lightly underlined full moons.

Two solar eclipses hugging the nodes, three lunar eclipses far from them: in 2027, the sky opens far more than it closes.

Three misconceptions fall with this definition. An eclipse is not a disaster: it’s a spotlight on one house of the chart for a few months. It doesn’t act “on the day”: astrologers watch the surrounding weeks instead, and the theme it touches often surfaces at the next transit over the same degree. And you don’t need to see an eclipse for it to count in a chart; visibility mostly matters to mundane astrology, which reads an eclipse for the countries it crosses.

The Leo–Aquarius axis: why these signs

Eclipses follow the nodes, and the nodes back up one sign roughly every eighteen months. The north node entered Aquarius in the summer of 2026 (July 26 for the true node, August 18 for the mean node) and stays there until March 2028; the south node is therefore in Leo for all of 2027. It retreats from about 22° Aquarius on January 1 to 3° Aquarius on December 31. Every eclipse of the year lines up on it, except the one of February 20.

That Virgo eclipse is the final echo of the previous axis, Virgo–Pisces, which carried the eclipses from March 2025 to August 2026. It sits far from the node (12°), hence its weakness: a full moon that ends a story rather than an eclipse that opens one. Likewise, the penumbral eclipse of July 18 in Capricorn is a distant preview of the next axis, Cancer–Capricorn, which takes over in spring 2028. That makes 2027 the heart of the Leo–Aquarius series: the two central solar eclipses of this axis happen this year.

What is this axis about? Leo speaks of what is yours: the heart, creation, the pleasure of being seen, natural authority. Aquarius speaks of what is shared: the group, the network, the common idea, the distance that lets you think. With the north node in Aquarius, the collective direction is the one to build; with the south node in Leo, personal attention is what you learn to stop demanding. The nodal cycle brings this axis back every 18.6 years: the last time was late 2007 to summer 2009.

The 19-year echo: 2008, 2027, 2046

This is the most useful key in this article, and the least known. Nineteen solar years equal almost exactly 235 lunations (the Metonic cycle), so an eclipse returns on the same calendar date and at the same degree of the zodiac, give or take a degree, nineteen years later. The eclipses of 2027 are not new: they are those of February and August 2008, back in the same spot of the sky. In Eastern Time, two of them even keep the date: February 6, 2008 and February 6, 2027; February 20, 2008 and February 20, 2027. They will return in 2046.

The echo isn’t perfect: a series wears out after four or five returns. The two solar eclipses of 2027 didn’t exist in 1989 (the eclipses then fell in Pisces and Virgo), and the lunar eclipses of February and August will be gone by 2046. But from 2008 to 2027, the four main eclipses answer each other to the degree, and the two lunar eclipses even trace back to 1989, when they were total. For anyone who can read their chart, it’s a ready-made personal calendar.

An eclipse doesn’t fall out of the sky; it comes back. The eclipses of 2027 are the daughters of 2008 and the mothers of 2046.

The exercise fits in one question: what began for you between February and August 2008? A place, a job, a relationship, a way of presenting yourself to the world. The houses touched in 2027 are the same; the themes come back, nineteen years more mature. If you were born after 2008, the echo means nothing to you yet: you’re living your first Leo–Aquarius series, the one you’ll remember in 2046.

Don’t confuse it with the saros, the cycle of 18 years and 11 days that astronomers use to sort eclipses into families. The saros brings back an eclipse of the same geometry (the total eclipse of August 2 belongs to saros 136, which produced those of July 11, 1991 and July 22, 2009, and will produce the coast-to-coast American eclipse of August 12, 2045), but shifted some ten degrees along the zodiac. For astrology, the 19-year echo is what counts, because it brings back the same degree.

Where to see the 2027 eclipses

The total eclipse of August 2 is the astronomical event of the year. The path of totality makes landfall in Morocco (Tangier), crosses the Strait of Gibraltar and the far south of Spain (Tarifa, CĂĄdiz, MĂĄlaga, Gibraltar, Ceuta, Melilla), then Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The times below are local to each city; totality durations are rounded down to the nearest ten seconds. Tangier at 8:46 am, Tarifa at 10:47 am: nine miles of strait and a two-hour gap on the clock, Morocco having gone back to GMT in September 2026.

Everywhere else in Europe the eclipse is partial, late morning with the Sun high: the light dims noticeably in the south, barely in the north. The British Isles get a bite of 27% to 42% around 10:00 am BST. It can’t be seen from the Americas, Japan, Korea or Australia: the Moon’s shadow stays on the far side of the Atlantic. Here is how it looks across the English-speaking world.

The annular eclipse of February 6, for its part, belongs to the Southern Hemisphere. The ring crosses southern Chile and Argentina, Uruguay and southern Brazil, then the Atlantic, before ending at sunset over Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria. From the United States and Canada, nothing: the penumbra never reaches North America. Continental Europe gets nothing either: the penumbra stops at the Canary Islands, and where it grazes Andalusia the Sun is already setting. Only the Canaries catch a 10% to 11% nick at the horizon.

The three lunar eclipses aren’t worth setting an alarm for. On February 20 (6:12 pm), the Moon is barely clearing the horizon on the East Coast and hasn’t risen farther west; over Europe it stands high, but penumbral: a light gray veil on one edge of the disk, hardly perceptible. The August 17 eclipse (3:13 am Eastern, 12:13 am Pacific) happens with the Moon up over all of North America, the one eclipse of 2027 the United States actually gets to watch; the July 18 eclipse is perceptible nowhere. For August 2, one rule without exception: you look at the Sun only through eclipse glasses certified to ISO 12312-2, and only totality, inside the path, is safe for the naked eye.

Which house the eclipse touches in your chart

An eclipse only makes sense once it’s placed in a chart. Three readings, from the simplest to the most precise.

By Sun sign. Put your sign in the 1st house and count: for an Aries, Leo is the 5th house and Aquarius the 11th. That’s the method of the twelve sections below, and of every horoscope. It’s right about the mood, approximate about the facts.

By rising sign. If you know your birth time, your ascendant gives you your real houses. Then read the section for your rising sign rather than your Sun sign, or both: the first says where the eclipse acts, the second how you live it. Our article on Sun sign vs. rising sign explains the difference.

By degree. This is the most personal reading: an eclipse that falls within 3° of a planet in your chart, or of its opposite point, concerns that planet directly. The four degrees to remember are 17° Aquarius (February 6), 2° Virgo (February 20), 10° Leo (August 2) and 24° Aquarius (August 17), with their opposites 17° Leo, 2° Pisces, 10° Aquarius and 24° Leo. A natal planet between 7° and 13° Leo, for instance, takes the total eclipse head-on.

How to check in two minutes

Calculate your birth chart for free, then look for a planet, the ascendant or the Moon in the ranges 14°–20° Aquarius, 29° Leo–5° Virgo, 7°–13° Leo or 21°–27° Aquarius, and in the opposite ranges. If you find one, the matching eclipse is yours; its house tells you the area of life, the planet tells you the function. If you find none, 2027 is a year of “background” eclipses for you: read your sign, and breathe.

Birthdays are the everyday version of this rule. The natal Sun receives the February 6 eclipse for Aquarians born February 4–8, the August 2 eclipse for Leos born July 31–August 4, the August 17 eclipse for Leos born August 14–19 and Aquarians born February 10–16, and the February 20 eclipse for Virgos born August 23–27 and Pisces born February 19–24. For them, the year is unlike any since 2008.

The 2027 eclipses sign by sign

For each sign: the solar houses where the two solar eclipses fall (Leo on August 2, Aquarius on February 6) and the eclipsed full moon of February 20 in Virgo, then one question for the year. Read your rising sign too if you know it. The twelve pages of our 2027 horoscope put these eclipses back into the rest of the year.

Aries: 5th and 11th houses, the axis of creation and community

For you, Leo is the 5th house: creativity, children, pleasure, what you do for the simple joy of doing it. The total eclipse of August 2 falls there, a week after Jupiter leaves that sector. Aquarius is your 11th house, friends, group projects and causes; the February 6 eclipse and the penumbral eclipse of August 17 play out there. The question of the year: which part of you belongs to the group, and which part belongs to you? A personal project that goes collective, or the reverse, is the most common form. The eclipsed full moon of February 20 touches your 6th house: health and routines, an organizational detail that resurfaces. Your Aries 2027 horoscope pins down the months. If you were born around March 30, nothing touches you directly: the total eclipse trines your Sun, which is more of a support.

Taurus: 4th and 10th houses, home and career

Leo is your 4th house: home, family, roots, what holds when everything moves. The total eclipse of August 2 happens there. Aquarius is your 10th, career and public standing: annular eclipse on February 6, penumbral on August 17. It’s the most concrete axis in the zodiac, and 2027 works it from both ends: a move, a relocation, a new role in the family or on the job are the typical scenarios. The golden rule: what gets decided in February on the work side finds its answer on the home side in August. The February 20 full moon in Virgo touches your 5th house, children and creative work. If you’re a Taurus born April 28–May 10, your Sun is square to one or the other solar eclipse: it’s the year you choose, because you can no longer keep everything. Month by month in the Taurus 2027 horoscope.

Gemini: 3rd and 9th houses, near and far

Leo is your 3rd house: words, siblings, neighbors, everyday travel. The total eclipse of August 2 settles there. Aquarius is your 9th, long journeys, studies, convictions: eclipses of February 6 and August 17. For a Mercury sign, that’s the native axis: what you say and what you believe. A trip, a course, the book you finally write, an exchange that changes an opinion. The eclipsed full moon of February 20 touches your 4th house, home. Good news: Uranus, your new tenant since 2026, makes a tight sextile to the total eclipse (9°09′ Gemini to 9°55′ Leo, under a degree from exact); the change the eclipse asks for is the one you already wanted. The Gemini 2027 horoscope has the rest.

Cancer: 2nd and 8th houses, yours and shared

Leo is your 2nd house: income, possessions, the value you grant yourself. The total eclipse of August 2 falls there. Aquarius is your 8th, shared money, inheritances, debts, intimacy and deep transformations: eclipses of February 6 and August 17. The 2–8 axis is the axis of resources, and 2027 asks the question plainly: what is yours, and what depends on others? A contract, a loan, a division of assets, a salary negotiation are its concrete forms. The February 20 full moon lights up your 3rd house: an awaited conversation takes place. None of the 2027 eclipses aspects the Cancer Sun: the year plays out in your houses, not on your person, and that’s more comfortable than it sounds. The month-by-month is in the Cancer 2027 horoscope.

Leo: 1st and 7th houses, you and the other

This is your eclipse year. Leo is your 1st house: the total eclipse of August 2 falls in your sign, at 9°55′, on the Sun of Leos born July 31–August 4. Aquarius is your 7th house, partnership, business partners, declared opponents: the February 6 eclipse (on the Sun of Leos born August 7–12, by opposition) and the August 17 eclipse (on that of Leos born August 14–19) fall there. The 1–7 axis is the most personal there is: who are you when no one is standing across from you? Commitment, breakup, new alliance or simply a new way of presenting yourself are the usual answers. The February 20 full moon concerns your 2nd house, money. And remember the echo: the eclipse of August 1, 2008 fell on the same degree. What began then reaches its second version. The Leo 2027 horoscope follows it month by month.

Virgo: 12th and 6th houses, retreat and work

Leo is your 12th house: what ends, what rests, what you don’t show. The total eclipse of August 2 falls there, a week after Jupiter arrives in your sign. Aquarius is your 6th, daily work, health, routines: eclipses of February 6 and August 17. The 6–12 axis is the axis of service and retreat: what do you do out of duty, and what should you stop doing? The end of a job, a leave, a reorganized daily life, a treatment you finally start. The eclipsed full moon of February 20 falls in your sign, at 2° Virgo, on the Sun of Virgos born August 23–27: for them, a personal revelation opens the year. With Jupiter in your sign from July 26, the 12th-house eclipse takes nothing away: it clears the ground before the best stretch of the year. Month by month in the Virgo 2027 horoscope.

Libra: 11th and 5th houses, friends and pleasure

Leo is your 11th house: friends, networks, group projects, long-term hopes. The total eclipse of August 2 plays out there. Aquarius is your 5th, creative work, children, light romance, pleasure: eclipses of February 6 and August 17. For an air sign, it’s a friendly axis, two houses of air and fire that ask you to choose between the group’s project and personal pleasure, or to find how to hold both. A friendship that becomes something else, a creation a collective picks up, a child who shifts the couple’s balance. The February 20 full moon touches your 12th house: a needed rest, a quiet ending. Libras born October 1–13 have their Sun sextile to the August eclipse or trine to the February one; the year asks little of them and offers openings. The Libra 2027 horoscope has the dates.

Scorpio: 10th and 4th houses, career and home

Leo is your 10th house: profession, reputation, what you’re known for. The total eclipse of August 2 falls there. Aquarius is your 4th, home, family, origins: eclipses of February 6 and August 17. Both solar eclipses are square to your Sun if you were born October 30–November 5 (for August 2) or November 6–13 (for February 6): it’s the year of decisions you can no longer put off, between what you build outside and what you protect inside. A promotion that requires a move, a parent who needs you, a departure. The February 20 full moon touches your 11th house, friends and projects. The good news is Scorpio itself: you prefer a real decision to a long blur. Details in the Scorpio 2027 horoscope.

Sagittarius: 9th and 3rd houses, meaning and words

Leo is your 9th house: travel, higher education, philosophy, life abroad. The total eclipse of August 2 happens there, trine to your Sun: for a fire sign, it’s the friendliest eclipse of the year. Aquarius is your 3rd, writing, learning, siblings, neighborhood: eclipses of February 6 and August 17. A departure, a degree, a publication, a language you start speaking: the 3–9 axis is the axis of knowledge, and yours by nature. The February 20 full moon touches your 10th house, career: something gets seen. If you were born November 30–December 5, your Sun sits at 10° Sagittarius, in exact trine to the August 2 eclipse: doors open, and it’s up to you to walk through. Month by month in the Sagittarius 2027 horoscope.

Capricorn: 8th and 2nd houses, shared and yours

Leo is your 8th house: other people’s money, inheritances, taxes, crises and rebirths. The total eclipse of August 2 falls there. Aquarius is your 2nd, income, assets, self-worth: eclipses of February 6 and August 17. It’s the mirror of Cancer’s axis: what you earn alone and what binds you to others, through a contract, a loan, a marriage, an estate. In practice: a financial matter that gets settled, a dependency you reduce, a worth you finally grant yourself. The eclipsed full moon of February 20 touches your 9th house: a trip or a course of study reaches its end. The penumbral eclipse of July 18, at 26° Capricorn, is the only one to fall in your sign; it’s too weak to count, unless your Sun sits on that degree (born January 16–18), and even then. The Capricorn 2027 horoscope places all this within the year.

Aquarius: 1st and 7th houses, you and the other

Your eclipse year, alongside Leo, but the other way around. Aquarius is your 1st house: the annular eclipse of February 6 falls in your sign, at 17°38′, on the Sun of Aquarians born February 4–8, and the eclipsed full moon of August 17, at 24° Aquarius, on that of Aquarians born February 10–16. Leo is your 7th house, partnership and alliances: the total eclipse of August 2 plays out there, opposite the Sun of Aquarians born January 29–February 2. The question is the same as Leo’s, asked from the other shore: who do you become when the other person takes all the room, or leaves it empty? The February 20 full moon concerns your 8th house, shared money and transformations. The 19-year echo speaks to you directly: the annular eclipse of February 6, 2008 hit the same degree, on the same calendar day in Eastern Time. What you started then under your own name comes back for its second version, with Pluto in your sign this time. The Aquarius 2027 horoscope details the months.

Pisces: 6th and 12th houses, daily life and retreat

Leo is your 6th house: everyday work, health, service rendered. The total eclipse of August 2 plays out there. Aquarius is your 12th, retreat, secrecy, what’s being prepared in the shadows: eclipses of February 6 and August 17. For you, the 6–12 axis is the native one: how to serve without erasing yourself, withdraw without running away. A change of job, a pause, a treatment, a project pursued quietly that comes into the open in August. The eclipsed full moon of February 20 is yours: at 2° Virgo, it faces the Sun of Pisces born February 19–24 and lights up your 7th house, partnership. A relationship says what it has to say. Saturn and Neptune in Aries don’t touch the 2027 eclipses; your year plays out over the long haul more than in the event. The Pisces 2027 horoscope details the months.

What to do (and not do) around an eclipse

Tradition advises against starting anything important on the exact day of an eclipse, and the advice has merit: an eclipsed new moon is a departure whose direction you can’t see yet. But the opposite rule, “nothing gets decided during eclipse season,” would paralyze ten weeks a year. Our position fits in three reflexes.

The eclipse reflex

Observe before acting. The forty-eight hours around an eclipse show what was already there: a fact, a remark, a wish. Write it down, don’t interpret it yet. Locate the house. An event in the area of the house touched is not a coincidence; it deserves your attention, not your panic. Let the season end. The right decision often ripens between two eclipses and gets made after the second: after February 20 for the winter, after August 17 for the summer.

Two uses to set aside. Predicting a disaster from an eclipse, for yourself or for a country: history is full of eclipses without consequences and disasters without eclipses. And performing an “eclipse ritual” to force an outcome: an eclipse grants nothing, it shows. That’s our line, understand rather than predict, and eclipses are the best place to hold to it.

After 2027: the eclipses of 2028

The nodes move into Capricorn–Cancer in spring 2028 (March 7 for the mean node, March 26 for the true node), and the eclipses follow. The year still opens on the Leo–Aquarius axis with the annular eclipse of January 26, visible at sunset from southern Spain and Portugal and as a thin partial that morning from the southeastern United States (16% in Miami, 14% in Houston), then shifts to the Cancer–Capricorn axis, which carries the eclipses through fall 2029. The total eclipse of July 21 (10:55 pm Eastern) crosses Australia and passes over Sydney.

And for the record, 2026 was the mirror year: the total eclipse of August 12, 2026 at 20° Leo, visible from Iceland and northern Spain, opened the Leo–Aquarius series that the August 2, 2027 eclipse carries to its peak. Spain thus sits at the center of three solar eclipses in eighteen months, north to south; the United States sits this round out and waits for August 12, 2045. We’ll cover the 2028 eclipses in a future guide.

Frequently asked questions about the 2027 eclipses

How many eclipses are there in 2027?

Five, strictly speaking: two solar eclipses (annular on February 6 at 17°38′ Aquarius, total on August 2 at 9°55′ Leo) and three lunar eclipses, all penumbral (February 20 at 1°59′ Virgo, July 18 at 25°58′ Capricorn, August 17 at 24°04′ Aquarius). Most calendars keep four, because the July 18 eclipse, thirteen minutes of penumbra 16° from the node, is imperceptible. The two solar eclipses are the only truly strong ones.

When is the next solar eclipse visible in the United States?

Not August 2, 2027: the Moon’s shadow stays over the Atlantic, Africa and Arabia, and no part of the United States is in the partial zone. Next for American skies: a thin partial on the morning of January 26, 2028 (16% in Miami, 14% in Houston), then a deeper one across the country on January 14, 2029. The next total eclipse to cross the contiguous United States comes on August 12, 2045, from the same saros family as the 2027 eclipse; Alaska gets totality first, on March 30, 2033.

Which zodiac signs are most affected by the 2027 eclipses?

Leo and Aquarius, because three of the five eclipses fall in their signs, in the 1st and 7th solar houses. Then Taurus and Scorpio, whose Sun receives both solar eclipses by square, on the career–home axis. Virgos born August 23–27 and Pisces born February 19–24 also have the eclipsed full moon of February 20 on their Sun. The remaining fire and air signs (Aries, Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius) meet these eclipses by trine or sextile, that is, as openings more than as tests.

Is an eclipse a bad omen in astrology?

No. An eclipse is a new or full moon reinforced by the nearby nodes: it underlines an area of life, it doesn’t destroy it. Experience shows eclipses without consequence and crises without eclipse. What it brings is clarity: a fact that comes to light, a decision that can no longer wait, in the house it touches. The right attitude is to observe the surrounding weeks, not to dread the day itself.

How long do the effects of an eclipse last?

Astrologers speak of a window of a few weeks around the eclipse for events, and of several months for the theme it opens, until a planet passes back over its degree. For the total eclipse of August 2 at 10° Leo, the Sun returns every August 2 and Mars about every two years. And nineteen years later, the 19-year echo brings an eclipse back to the same degree: the 2027 eclipse is the daughter of the one of August 1, 2008.

What does an eclipse on my Sun sign mean?

That the year following your birthday is a year of personal repositioning, comparable to a very emphatic personal new moon: identity, health, direction in life. In 2027 this concerns Aquarians born February 4–8 (the February 6 eclipse) and Leos born July 31–August 4 (the total eclipse of August 2). By opposition, Leos born August 7–12 and Aquarians born January 29–February 2 also receive these eclipses, on the partnership axis. It’s neither a threat nor a promise: it’s a year that counts.

What is the difference between a solar and a lunar eclipse in astrology?

A solar eclipse is a new moon near a node: the Moon passes in front of the Sun, and astrology reads a beginning, often outward and visible. A lunar eclipse is a full moon near a node: Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, and astrology reads a culmination, a realization, often emotional. Both come in pairs, two weeks apart, during eclipse seasons. In 2027 the solar ones are strong and the lunar ones very weak.

Why do the 2027 eclipses repeat the eclipses of 2008?

Because nineteen years equal almost exactly 235 lunations: an eclipse returns on the same date and at the same degree nineteen years later. The annular eclipse of February 6, 2008 was at 17°45′ Aquarius; the one of February 6, 2027 is at 17°38′. The total eclipse of August 1, 2008 was at 9°32′ Leo; the one of August 2, 2027 is at 9°55′. The same houses of your chart are touched. What began for you in 2008 gets its second version in 2027, and the third comes in 2046.

Do I need eclipse glasses for the August 2, 2027 eclipse?

Only if you travel for it: from the United States there is nothing to see. Wherever the eclipse is partial, from London to Cairo, the Sun stays dangerous from start to finish; even 70% covered, it burns the retina in seconds. Only eclipse glasses certified to ISO 12312-2 are safe; the pair you kept from 2017 or 2024 still works if the filters are unscratched. No sunglasses, smoked glass or unfiltered phone camera. The naked eye is allowed only during totality, inside the path. Keep children supervised.

Going further

An eclipse is always read on two levels: the sky, which is the same for everyone, and the chart, which is the same for no one. For the second, calculate your birth chart and look for the four degrees of 2027; if you know your birth time, your rising sign gives you the real houses. For the first, the year’s full calendar is in Astrology 2027: key dates for every sign, and the three Mercury retrogrades, the first of which frames the February eclipse season, in Mercury retrograde 2027. Our transits page explains how a planet passing back over an eclipse degree wakes up its theme. And if you’re in the United States, you have two choices: set the alarm for 3 am on August 17 for a full moon that’s barely shaded, or fly to Tarifa or Luxor for August 2, glasses on. Europe’s next total eclipse waits until 2053; America’s, until 2045.
